Mby website will have probably done tests on these and are available for download for a few quid.

Also go to the www.ybw.com forum and ask there.

Alright you two, that's quite enough cheeky nonsense.
I thought Jersey Boy sounded better,Guernsey Boy sounds like a breed of bovine.
Anyway both places are outside my normal terms of reference i.e. Monaco,St.Tropez,Barbados .
I believe comprehensive school children visit those English Islands on school trips.
A certain Cockernee geezer is heading there in his boat in the next day or so. Hopefully they make sure all doors and windows are locked and valuables safety away biggrin

I love these boats hence my name. I was buying a Monterey 27. For the fact I could tow it with my Range rover. The bigger you go the cost of ownership starts to go sky words. You have to get them lifted and transported by truck. Hope you find what your looking for.

Is this the Aston Martin forum?
Having been fortunate enough to have had 5 Sunseekers, and always found the factory hugely helpful with all my ridiculous requests, I would go to source. I know the company has changed somewhat, but there are still a lot of the old guard still employed. They were all enthusiastic, and many will have been involved with these older models.
Whichever you choose, they are great fun, and still a great design

Well that slapped me on the wrist for putting the wrong question to fellow Aston owners, how very childish of whoever runs these things. Many thanks for the replies and hopefully those to come. I will say that I didn't know Pistonheads even had a boat section and have not got time to pour over the net looking and yes I am seriously looking to purchase one of these super boats, I just wanted some advice from people that have or still do own one.

The running costs will be based upon hull condition, engine maintenance, electronics and engine usage. Older boats and their hulls may pose a problem, has it been repainted often and how has the boat been stored, dry or in the water? You will want a full survey undertaken and like a high performance car it is all about service history and making sure everything works and has bills for any replaced parts.

Be careful - some parts for the most powerful Ford Dover-based Sabre diesels are now unobtainable and can make boats with them fitted little more than re-engine projects, for which you'll need very deep pockets.

There's a bloke called Paul Foulston on the ybw.com forum "latestarter" (ex-Ford and ex-Cummins) who is very knowledgeable on all matters oily.

Not sure how relevant the sabre diesels bit is.

95% of the boats you look at with that brief are going to be Volvos. Either AQAD41 or Kad 42 as you are in changeover territory with that date. Good strong motors with a proviso that the heads like to warp if the exchangers aren't maintained. In basic terms they are the same engine with the Kad motors gaining a belt driven compressor. The remainder are likely to be petrols. Huge difference in performance between the motor types.

Being over 20 years old you will likely need a survey for insurance purposes anyway.

Factory won't be too much help on these models but parts generally can be sourced quite easily elsewhere. It is mouldings and specific to model parts you will struggle with. An example would be the stainless air inlets, prone to falling off if you don't keep an eye and a bugger to track down a replacement.

A development of the XPS models they have extremely good seakeeping qualities similar to offshore racers of the same period. The designer reflecting his many successful race boats of the era.

Buy a Sunseeker of this age for it's performance on the water not the living space as they are a true deep vee designed from the outside in not the other way round.

My thanks again to everyone for their input,
Bellair 302, Why would it matter how many time the hull has been painted and which is better, boat stored in or out of the water? and what sort of problems with these boats were you thinking of.
Motorvator, you are spot on with the engines, every boat we have looked so far has had one or other fitted.
Anyone else have any info to throw in ? Has any body had one for a good number of years ?
Cheers guys.

I had my XPS34 for a good few years during which it was top to bottom overhauled including an engine change from the 165 to 200 Aqad40b to aqad41b. Not as easy as it sounds as the bellhousings changed for fuel pump timing.

As far as the kad42s go, a lot of mates have had them and the AQAD tends to be more flexible as the compressor on the kad has a habit of kicking you in the back at the most awkward times. Sea trial is the key and make sure you try it at the speeds you will be doing. Also bear in mind whether the boat is loaded as you will use it or not. All very nice popping 40 knots with empty everything to find it doesn't do what you expected when you go out loaded.

Both motors should pull near as damn it the same rpm. If not discount the running gear first and then you know if you have weak motor.

And get a volvo engineer to look over the motors for you. Don't rely on a surveyor or mate with a diesel astra.

The outdrives want a good look over, expect to be doing the thick end of a couple of grand on each if they are in bad order but they can be bullet proof if well maintained. Again a Volvo engineer will now what he is looking at.

The hulls of that era are very sound, but a good look at the bottom by someone who knows what they are looking at will pay you out. For my money I would be looking for a clean example that hasn't been epoxied and then giving it the treatment myself.

Other than that, you are looking at standard boat stuff and cosmetics.

I also own a Revenger San Marino which effectively is the same hull form. That's my race boat.

I'm into a Camargue 46 at the moment for the luxury side of boating.
