So, I'm 16, due to be 17 in December, and have a long summer holiday.

So I'm whiling the time away by just throwing in random cars into Confused.com to see if there are any cars I might be able to consider after passing my test.

The 4 I've got in a list at the moment are:

Suzuki Swift GLX VVTS

Seat Izbia

Fiat Panda 100 HP

Renault Clio Ripcurl

They all are about £1.5k to insure. That's with a minimum of 11k miles/year, 17 year old as owner, and sole driver, no NCB, blah blah blah.

Any suggestions from PH? smile

Why sole driver?
Adding parents can help reduce premium.

Yeh definitely add your parents as named drivers with you as the main policy holder. It saved me 400 quid when I first started driving on my 1.1 saxo

It seems to vary.

Some quotes come up rather cheap, without parents, but adding parents on seems to push it up way more.

For example, Privilege quotes £1.5k with me as sole driver, but adding parents on seems to push that up to £1.6k.

With other companies, it only makes a difference of about -£50.

Having said that, Admiral wanted £4,664, but adding parents pushed the price down to about £2,550.

I'm only doing it as sole driver because I can't be bothered loading my parent's details into Confused.com lol.

If it was up to me, I'd have a Panda 100 HP like a shot, but trouble is, I looked on Autotrader, and there's only like 3 within 50 miles of me, and I'm just keeping my options open really, as it's going to be quite a while until I get to 17, and I don't want to have my heart pinned on one of those, only to find that I'm going to have to travel like 150 miles to see a st example nerd

Is that a "Jesus Christ, those premiums are bloody cheap"

Or is that "Jesus Christ, those premiums are bloody expensive"?

I live in a village in West Berkshire, very horse-y and rich toff "Couldn't do without my range rover dah-ling!" kind of area.

Seriously. Look at bigger cars. All the hatches get terrible insurance ratings as they often get crashed by.... You guessed it.... 17 year old lads!

Stands to reason they will screw you on insurance.

So, pummel a few grandad cars in like mine, and old accord. Other good suggestions might be an Octavia, old Saab or Volvo or an old mondeo.

Stay away from anything premium like bmw or merc or Lexus. They will hit hard for those like they do the hatches.

I've looked at bigger cars, like the old mondeos, and foci and such-like, but the insurance for those tend to come in at like £2.5k+

Fat chance of that frown
