New Outboard

My new Honda outboard arrived dry, first time I've had a new one so bear with me....

10/30 oil for the engine and SAE90 for the gears...does this need to be a special marine spec, I've got the vehicle equivalent in my garage.

Use the proper marine stuff or your warranty will be void (read the owner's book on lube). I've always used the Quicksilver stuff for almost 30 years and it's really good.

If it's a new one, it should only need engine oil. Gearboxes are always done. What engine is it? Where did you get the engine from? If it's somewhere you'll be getting it serviced I'd just get the oil from them so any problems with warranties are avoided.

Thanks chaps. Picked some 'proper' stuff up yesterday, all done and running like a dream. The gearbox did have fluid but I've changed it anyway. It's only a baby 2.2hp for a dinghy bought online, ever so light and seems nicely put together. A bit quieter than my old Mercury 90!

Did you buy it new from a dealer? They really should have supplied it with some oil in a bottle. All of the engines we sell get filled with oil, run, then we drain the oil into a container and include it in the box. All the customer has to do is refill it and away you go.

Thanks Z4, when I ordered the motor they were very clear it would be dry so no worries there, used it off the IOW this weekend and very happy.

Nosed into the link from your profile, what a shame Wightlink insist on charging like wounded bulls for the crossing to Yarmouth otherwise I could see your emporium being a regular stop off on the way to the ferry!

Have given up using them and now fight my way over from Southampton.
