996 C4S Suspension noise - advice please

My 2002 C4S has just over 70k on the clock and has this past week or so developed a clunking sound on the rear passenger side when going over small dips in the road (bumps don't seem to cause the noise). The sound is almost hollow sounding kind of like a metal bottle being tapped I suppose. Having read a bunch of threads drop links seem to be a common cause of suspension noise but I wondered if anyone else has come across this? I've taken a look underneath as best I can without jacking it up and nothing appears to be broken from what I can see but in all honesty I don't really know what I'm looking for!

I'd really like to get my hands dirty and make some repairs myself as it's not due a service until September and that cost me a grand last time for what was supposed to just be a minor service so I'm loathe to pay for something which could be pretty simple for me to fix myself and learn a few things in the process.

Additionally the front suspension can sometimes be a bit clunky and is definitely squeaky when going over bumps, which I have read on other threads could be the coffin arm ball joints which have dried out or possibly the diagonal link "tuning forks". People recommend drilling a small hole in the rubber and packing it with grease. Anyone got thoughts on this or advice on how to go about it if thoughts are it's a good course of action? Like I said I don't mind giving it a go replacing some suspension components but some thoughts on where to start would be great as I also plan on doing the engine mounts myself soon too.

First port of call, jack it up, and have a go at shaking the rear wheel in all directions and check for any movement. You may need to use some strength to get things moving, and if you feel anything, you may need to get some help with the shaking so that you can inspect the underside for the source of the movement.

However some sus noises may only manifest themselves when there is weight on the wheels. Perhaps a friendly MOT garage could get it up on the shaker plates for you to inspect.

I have to be frank and say the grease packing of the rubbers did not work for me and I had to resort to new coffin arms sadly but was worth trying

Sounds like coffin arms bushes have gone.

Thanks for the advice all. I think I might go the whole hog and change engine mounts, coffin arms, tuning forks, drop links and tie rod ends as I'm fed up of it feeling clunky anyway!

Any recommendations or tips on doing the work?
