Want a good zoom which doesn't cost the earth.
Discussion
Hi all, long time ph'er but not been in these parts much but was looking for some help.
I have a canon 1000d which came with a efs 18-55mm lens, wondering if there is another lens out there which has a stronger zoom, is no larger so will fit in my case still, has all the stabilisation and auto focus as the current lens and doesn't cost the earth.
I know I'm probably asking a lot but I would really like the camera to be able to work in the same manner as it currently does but just with better magnification.
Any help appreciated would prefer to spend less than £100 and don't mind secondhand.
Thanks for taking the time to read and have a good day.

Is this the one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-S-55-250mm-4-5-6-... ?
And is this a good price, doesn't seem to be any bigger than my current lens is this right

Sorry and I guess I should read up on these things, but does the fact that my current lens is 18-55 and the other one is 55-250 mean that the lowest zoom with the new lens would be the same level as the greatest zoom from the first? Ideally I would like say a 18-250 if this were the case.
AFAIK the tamron doesn't have any IS, neither does the Sigma version unless you spend a lot more money.
I very recently made this exact decision for my 60d and went for the Canon 55-250, partly for the IS, and I managed to find one new on ebay for £99 delivered.
the 55-250 is obviously physically longer than the 18-55 but not by much, and they feel more or less the same.

The new canon 18-135 stm is a great lens and very sharp.
For the money it's awesome

As others have said, if you try to go for a single lens with that sort of zoom range, you're really going to be making a compromise on image quality.
Whatever choice you make, however, it's worth going to http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ to find a good price. It's a price comparison website which includes pretty much everywhere you'd want to buy a lens from.

I have a Canon 550D with the 18-55 kit lens and a 55-250.
It really isn't that bad to carry around at all.
I often have one lens on the camera and the other in my pocket if I'm travelling light.
The 55-250 is very capable considering the price and I'd highly recommend it.
I took similar advice to what is being given on this thread about large range zoom lens and I don't regret my choice.
