Welcomed my new neighbours in the pub last night but got a verbal attack about the noise my TVR 420SEAC makes when i go to work (6:30in the morning).
I tried to explain that i was sorry and all that, and that i have been driving TVR's to work for the past ten years but he was having none of it.
I have read many posts in the archive about this topic but like all things in law its seems a bit grey to me.
Bearing in mind that i have always been concious that my car is "loud" i do take care not to rev too hard or for too long before driving out to work.(i take great care not exceed 2500rpm until its warm in case i damage the engine anyway).
The car is totally standard in every way.
Any advice on this as i am pretty certaina formal complaint will be made?

Thinking about it if its too loud the MOT would have picked it up? If you have any doubts get it tested. I think you'll find it is within limits but makes a noise that carries more than a normal car. The problem extends to Motorcycles where for emissions reasons 2 strokes are being replaced by 4 strokes. The 4's have a nasty exhaust bark that is costing MX'ers their circuits. Even in Trials the new Montesa 4 stroke is causing concern as the noise "carries" much further than the two-strokes.

Anyway if you are keen to limit damage to next door neighbourliness then what about getting some of those muffler extensions used at track days for cars abouve the dBA limit? Maybe the whingers will want to contribute to your out of pocket expenses.

great idea....if your car has passed MOT with it as suggested above, then you could say 'well this will help, it'll cost X amount'. If they're happy to pay for it then no problems, if not then sod em!

How long afer the dispute has ended, do you still have to declare it?

I mention it, as a friend of mine had some explaining to do when he sold his house due to the neighbours and didn't declare it to the new buyers..
If your car is standard and road legal then I doubt a formal complaint will achieve much except cause bad feeling all round. I've owned TVR's over many years and on three occasions I've had people complain about the noise:
1) Didn’t like the fact his windows rattled when I pulled up. Old windows in loose frames!!
2)Asked me to turn off the engine while I opened the garage doors to put the car away. Only drove it 2-3 times a month and he lived across the road!!
3)Didn't like the noise at 6.30am on the three or so occasions a year I took the car to work. They kept three large dogs permanently outside in a shed and they barked every day and night!!
I've had 10 times more people ask me to hear and rev the cars than complain though

I think like that at times...I know.....(my fault..
) The post was in recognition of the hassle my mate had from the buyers of his house though..
be polite but explain it is legal and designed that way. Many times people complain through jealousy, or more often ignorance but some through wanting their own way. Allegedly a well known BMW racer and dealer moved to the country and then complained about the smell and the shit on the road. Offer to plant a leylandier hedge to muffle the noise, about 17ft should do, might darken their garden though.
Sounds like the common or garden arse.
They are everywhere and if it wasnt your TVR it would be something else.

Realistically it is a loud piece of kit and would upset most people to be woken from their slumber no matter what the noise is caused by, working shifts my neighbours wake me with their dogs/kids/tv/radio/diy/revving engines all the time, so I buy ear plugs as I do not expect the world to stop revolving on my account.. occasionally the noise breaks though these and at those times I am not a happy bunny.. to be fair they try and keep the noise down as they realise the hours I work which is very decent of them.. If he is being a stubborn old git and not discussing it with you in a calm fashion but wants it all his way then that is something unlikely to change, all you can do is suggest there are options available = trackday silencer & earplugs.. in the meantime happy to convoy down with G-Man and a few others so he can see he doesn't have it all that bad

Seriously this neighbour noise complaint is a problem because ultimately it is going to spoil some of the enjoyment of owning your car. Is it possible to clarify from your neighbour whether its the car they hate whatever time you use it, or whether it is specifically about the 6.30am v8 wake up call? If it is the latter is it possible to find from them a time that would be acceptable e.g after 7.00am and come to some comprimise (if possible) for when you leave for work. I know this sounds like 'giving in' but if you can't get a resolution and even if police involvement comes to nothing it's going to get to you everytime you start the car - one of the best moments of SEAC ownership. I think it's all boils down to reasonableness. During the normal working week I can't imagine that after 7.00am could get a justified complaint. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Tell your sticky beeking NEW neighbour to shove his complaint right up his exhaust pipe. Afterall, you were obviously going completely out of your way to cause upset and disturbance to his sad little life. Dont you just love these bloody people.!?

Why do you need to even rev your TVR to 2500rpm and warm it up before you drive away? Is it a TVR thing?Surely, you can start it up and ease it of the drive immediately and just potter down the road until you are out of ear shot.
I always thought the best way to warm up a car was to drive it gently. If this is not the case I am willing to be educated.

Think a slight misunderstanding and slight education required as requested
- what I believe Rich is referring to is that he does not exceed 2500rpm when going off down the road in the morning, I would imagine (like all good TVR owners) he allows the oil pressure to build up on tick-over before setting off which takes a minute or so and infact is a must for any car as it ensures that the oil has a chance to move around the engine before any extra load.. after that you can then set off on your way - Irrespective, if the first thing you hear in the morning is a SEAC you will know about it.. even on tick over..
