Test drive insurance

Does anyone have any pointers on how to insure a 19 year old for a test drive? I am looking at private sale as opposed to dealers, and have found it hard to find short term insurance that will cater for me. Is it just a case of phoning up admiral and asking them if they will insure me for a day on any particular vehicle that I want to test?

I tried that one: they won't insure me on the Jag X300 as it is too high an insurance category for my age but thanks very much for the suggestion

To clarify, I mean they won't insure me for a test drive: it would be a bit foolish if I were looking at a car that I couldn't insure myself on...

Could you take someone with you who is insured to drive other cars? Then if you like what you see and they confirm the test drive checks out okay you can then insure it yourself?

You will be looking for problems with the car rather than if you like the car for yourself I assume. So just get a friend/family member to drive for you.

If not just buy a years insurance, if you then like the car you can drive away that day, if not you can cancel for the price of an admin fee.
