Saab 9000 - any good at all?

Hi All,

Currently have a £300 pound bmw 5 series which is great, however it costs me a fair bit on insurance as im still young.

Iv been looking about and noticed that a Saab 9000 2.0 ecopower is £100 a month cheaper!

Just wanted some input to see if theyre any good and worth swapping the bm for?

Great cars.

Solidly built, quick for little money, reliable. Not as well balanced as the 5 but they can be made to handle well.

They can also take a fair heft of tuning and engine mods, yielding some impressive results for £ per BHP

I think I'm the only person on PH who has no love for them.

Had one for a month or so back in about 2000; even though it was new I thought the ride managed to be both crashy and wallowy, the interior creaked liked you wouldn't believe, it used more fuel than the performance on offer and I also thought it was awkwardly styled.

I then had a BMW e39 of similar vintage and it felt like it was from a different planet - I simply loved it.

Just IMO though, I'm sure I'm wrong.

Most comfortable seats/ergonomics of any car I ever driven.

I had one a couple of years ago.
Effortless cruiser.
Comfiest seats ever.
100% reliable.
Never needed anything for mot.

Only reason I don't still have it is that it got T boned by an OAP who ran a red light.
There car demolished. Absolutely demolished.
Dint in passenger door, wheel and suspension ripped off and wing damaged.

I'd have another Saab and like to think I will one day.

They stopped making them in '98 replaced by the 9-5.

Isn't the 9000 one of their longest production runs?

I had 3 consecutive SAAB approved used 9000's and did about 35K trouble free miles in each of them. Sold them before they got to 100K

Great cars, 2.3 HOT is quick, all very comfortable and well made.
I echo the another poster's view on how comfy the seats are. Try them!
I think they still look good and I'm sure there are a few good ones out there

If the insurance is £100 a month cheaper, I hate to think what your monthly payment is currently!! How old are you?

If the insurance is £100 a month cheaper, I hate to think what your monthly payment is currently!! How old are you?

Agreed! Im 19, since i passed my test i have been on a fleet policy so iv had a new shape alfa spider & an rx8 as well.

Now left that job to find my own way doing an apprenticeship i currenlty pay £200 a month for the bmw! Which is a lot

Had a 9000 - loved it. One of the few cars I haven't begrudged spending out for repair bills. Mine was slow but fabulously comfortable. More space than some "estates" in the back, too.

your average 1.4 hatchback was 150 plus so i would rather the extra cash and waft in a big saloon!

My Dad had a 2.0 9000CS and a 2.0 9000CD as company cars. He did over 200k in both and absolutely nothing went wrong with either of them. The CS (or The Enterprise as it became known as the mileage climbed even higher) was handed down to various family members and given a pretty hard time in its later life. Still nothing went wrong with it.
Utterly faithful and hugely comfortable cars.
