Sold bike and still in my name - can't track owner!!

Bit silly I know but these things happen. Please don't make up a load of consequences of this negligence.
Sold a bike to a lady up north for her husband as a wedding present. She paid the money into my account, once it had cleared arranged a courier to collect the bike.
They collected it, I signed and dated V5 and sent it up with the bike then went on holiday.
Three months later got the tax reminder through.
Right now can't find the courier details, she won't return my mail and calls and never got her details to forward onto DVLA.
So I have a bike in my name, I suspect not being used, fully paid and unable to provide the DVLA necessary details.
What options do I have?!

Phone DVLA and tell them you sent off the paperwork and never thought to take a note of the details, which you no longer have.
Follow it up with a letter stating the same.
They will complain that it is your job to double check that you get a letter confirming they received the paperwork but you can throw the fact the V5C doesn't state that and the postal acceptance rule etc....at the end of the day they have to update the record to show what you said.

Hang on, do you mean that rather than send the V5 to the DVLA you sent it up north with the bike?
If so, I wouldn't tell any lies about having put it in the post, as if she ends up sending it in then it will be quite apparent what you've done.
Just write to them and explain your error, they'll update the record to show that the bike has no known registered keeper surely?

Yes. The courier company, who were reputable just can't find their details now but still looking!, explained that's how the process normally worked. They were wrong then AFAIK, when you sell it's supposed to be you that sends it off to the DVLA, unless you're selling to a trader, then you give them the V5 and just send the slip off to say that's what you've done.Blue Oval84 said:

You are right, I should have said something, but was in a rush, happy to see bike gone and passed it on with the paperwork. Just found the courier! Sent them a note, see what they say
