Been out for a drive this a.m. and in the process of fiddling with the various dials to demist the screen, all my gauges stopped working and the red battery/alternator light came on. Been in the footwell and have replaced fuse 11 (dashboard battery feed, lights etc) which now means my rev counter works but not the others and still that red light is on. Anyone got any ideas please before I crick my neck further underneath the dash ?

Is it possible there is a second fuse supplying the other dials? Doesn't explain why they would both go at once, but otherwise don't see why all the instruments would go down together without taking out the tacho.

The no-charge warning light normally tells you that the alternator isn't charging (duh ) in other words there is a voltage difference betwen the alternator output and the ignition circuit. However, this could be because the alternator output is high and the supply from the ignition circuit is low, or vice versa.

Does it come on when you switch the ignition on without starting the engine, or only when the engine is running?

Does the oil light come on? (same ignition +ve as rest of dash, earthed through oil switch) if so lt green ignition +ve is ok - but this is sliced to feed just about everything behind dash...

Do the lights come on on the dials (would prove earth for dash is OK) - but again black wire spliced togeether & distributes -ve all over dash.

If there is a fault on the alt, pull the sense wire (spade into alternator) & see if rest of dash works OK

Although i am certainly no expert, it sounds to me like an earth problem.

Thanks for your postings. The red battery light only comes on when car is running - no other warning light comes up. The dashboard lighting works as does the clock !

These all use the same ground in the dash, which seems to be Ok if the lights/clock work. So your fuse may have blown again - problem with ignition switched wire I guess.

Ignition light works with reverse polarity, I think you are seeing 13v at alt ->gd on ign circuit, should have 12v on ign circuit for light to go out. With ign on and engine not running should gd thru alt ie light on, as well as oil warning light being light. Hence think you are not getting 12v on the ign circuit.

AS for what it is????
switch / ign relay / connectors.........

The blower motor is also on the same circuit in the Chim, not sure if its the same on the Griff.
