Im picking up a car next week and asked if i could have the v5 11 digit reference number to tax the car and he said i cant yet because im not a registered keeper and that if ive just bought the car its ok to drive home etc without car tax?

You can tax it on the New Keeper supplement which you will get at the point of sale.

Or, assuming all the BiBs are on leave that day, and all the ANPR cameras are switched off, you could drive it home...

If it's not taxed it needs trade plates to drive it legally on the road. Shimples.

So if i buy the car i should get this supplement and then i can apply online as normal? Why wont the garage let me tax before i buy the car?

Don't do it online until you have the full V5 with your details on it. If you do it online before that, the new disc will be posted to the old RK.
Go to a Post Office.

Ask the garage to arrange the tax and pay for it on collection of the car. That's what I did with mine

He offered to go with me and do this, just hope thier open late on saturdays.

To save me making a new thread i have just done a hpi check and it came back all clear apart from the v5 issue date does not match dvla.

Why would this be? Is it a big concern?

The opening hours of Post Offices vary but they are generally only open in the morning on Saturday.
