Am i right in thinking that i can put my Sim card [under Contract] in any other phone and that the charges associated with it will be transferred to that new phone?
And as a consequence I could put a different Sim in my old phone and the same would apply?

Yep.
If the "other" phone is SIM-locked to a particular network provider, you'll only be able to use SIM cards from that provider (unless you get the phone unlocked).
Same for your phone - other cards will work in it, but if its locked, only those from the same provider.
