£100K Garage: Craig Lamb

Previously owned: Citroen AX, Renault Clio Williams, Seat Arosa, Golf TDI, Volvo XC90, Abarth 500 Esseesse... Various work related vehicles far too embarrassing to mention. Currently owned: Audi A3, Nissan Juke
On the shortlist: "Something to cart the family around in. Love the Range Rover but being so new prices are rather steep. Never really been a fan of the Sport and I feel that the previous generation RR already looks quite dated. Something fun as I like to disappear like many others on a Sunday morning and just randomly drive. Always had a thing for Elises so something in that vein has to be included. Also a Jag is on the list. Ever since my uncle took me out in his XJS years ago I have grown rather partial to them."

Range Rover Evoque
Cost: £38,481
Balance: £61,519
Why I chose it: "OK, so it's not a full sized one but again there is something about them which ticks a fair few buttons. They are not huge but the kids will fit in the rear. I wanted a Range Rover that was not dated so in that vein I feel this is a good way to go."

Renault Sport Spider
Cost: £17,995
Balance: £43,524
Why I chose it: "Ever since I first saw pics of this I instantly fell in love. Also reminds me of the fun I use to have in the Willy all those years ago (when it worked) This one is the cheapest in the classifieds but is yellow and doesn't have the daft decals on the bonnet. Oh, and the doors!"

Jaguar XKR
Cost: £39,995
Balance: £3,529
Why I chose it: "Always wanted an XKR! Simple really. This one in white is a little in your face but hey why drive something that makes a noise like that V8 and not have it a little OTT. There are a fair few XKRs but it had to be the later 5.0 V8. This one seemed to tick all the boxes."

Peugeot 106 GTI
Cost: £1,583 (for sale at 2,000 euros in Ireland, converted 31/07/14)
Balance: £1,946
Why I chose it: "Need a shopping cart which can be used and abused. Loving French hot hatches this could not be ignored. Oh, and it's yellow as well. Not many of these seem to be available but this one looked pretty original." (N.B. Unfortunately Craig's yellow GTI has sold so it's been substituted with this one).

Evoque - too mcu of the 100K.

XKR - think it will become a classic.

If you have any children the final car won't be in the drive much.

Good Q - they weren't even meant to be that good, as I recall. Very heavy which ruined any 'sportyness' aspects.

edit - you seem to be right, actually, sorry I almost thought that was sarcastic but it's got around 100kg more than a contemporary elise - and even less stuff. Where does the weight come from?

Very heavy chassis, poorly designed IIRC.

Didn't the designer of the Elise chassis look at the Renault chassis and assume it was the jig upon which the real chassis would be made? Or was that an urban story?

Amazing this little lot adds up to £100K! I think you could find four genuinely nicer cars for a quarter of that. But then again you could spend nearly £100k on a new Range Rover...
