New clutch/flywheel - slipping

Afternoon all,

I've just been to test drive a BMW 320d, 2003 E46 shape.

The car has just had a brand new clutch and flyhweel, but in 5th and 6th gears the clutch would slip slightly.

The dealer told me this is the clutch bedding in, but I'm struggling to believe that!!

He said after a few thousand miles it will be perfect. Is he having me on?

My guess is it's not had a clutch change at all.

If it's had one it's most likely a self adjusting unit SAC that's been fitted without the proper £350 sac fitting tool .

They cheaped out, I'll bet they replaced the DMF (dual mass flywheel) but did not do the clutch that will have been abused to hell by the failing DMF

You always change the clutch when you do a DMF.

If you're not going to replace the clutch don't replace the dual mass, just weld it solid!

There's a thread on here about whether you've ever been lied to by a car dealer. Just thought I'd point that out.

Yep, ALWAYS change the DMF with the clutch, I learnt the hard way and it cost me £400!

A clutch shouldn't slip at all in gear. New or not, its broken, that simple. It won't magically repair itself once you've parted with your money.

Walk away, unless its cheap enough to factor in a new flywheel & clutch.

This, I'm guessing in a few months when the dealer is suggesting it'll have bedded in he'll be longer there to argue with.

The slip is only damaging the clutch more, soon it'll be slipping in all the gears, up any inclines etc etc.
