Dog scraping his nose

My golden retriever loves doing what his name suggests and retrieving things. However he thinks the game is to run as fast as he can at the object and grab it as he thunders by.
As a result, te scrapes his nose on the ground and the end looks a bit battered. I try to hide the dummies (so he has to slow down to find them) but it is not always possible.
Any advice for:
1. What to do to prevent it?
2. What to do with his nose when he has scraped it?
It doesn't seem to worry him at all - it just looks a bit unsightly.
Cue "my dog has no nose" jokes.
