Think you are talking about where the y piece meets the rest of the exhaust system under the car right? Has the y piece been used before, clamped before, or maybe any minor dings as all those will probably make a big difference. Maybe try a little bit of wd40 or grease to lube it up before you slide it in (giggidy!)
Pictures are always helpful. There's more knowledgeable guys on here that are usually helpful but thought I'd try help out.
