Stream from iPad to TV?

I want to stream films from my iPad to my TV. Can I do this without Apple TV? I have one of those xbmc android boxes but frankly it just confuses me. I also have a smart blu-Ray player that streams from my android phone very easily but the website I want to stream from only works from apple devices! Humph!

Hang on OP one tiny issue...
... you can't stream to an Chromecast.
Chromecast works by a compatible app on your iPad sending the link to the video to the Chromecast. The Chromecast then connects to this and plays it all by itself (ie you can turn your iPad off, and the video keeps player).
If the video is on your iPad then I can't see how you're going to play it on a Chromecast - unless there's a video app that can work as a streaming server?

I've just picked up the Apple TV
connected through wire to router and the airplay works well
although my iphone would show full screen on video d/l app which i have movies on the ipad didn't seem to be able to mirror this in full size?
