Water Temp Gauge

Over the last weekend and this my water gauge seems to be on the fritz. Last Friday it was hitting the roof and although it was a very hot day car did get warm nothing really happened. This Saturday it behaved wonderfully all morning until I came to take a trip home. It then wouldn't get up to normal temp. Fans are still kicking in at 90 and its running like a dream but wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

Also metal dust caps or plastic?? I have 3 metal (someone has a memento)but keep reading horror stories.

All seems ok on both occasions
