My quest for diesel maybe complete

But there is little advice I need.i have been offered a 1.9 tdi passat 75'000 mls on a 06 plate for £2500. But there is a little issue with it

1. 1 the egr light is on
2. 2 the dual mass fly wheel needs replacing

Now I have been told about a kit for around £200 which replaces the flywheel for a solid one and includes a matching clutch and bearings.and the egr probably just needs a clean.apart from this the car drive really well .is mint and in a lovely unmarked black with I belive rs4 alloys on it. So is it worth the money considering the rissues s or should I walk away and keep looking...my father can will fit the bits if I go ahead with it.hes a ex military mechanic..

if thats a good price then get it. milage not too bad, seems a bit odd its chewed a flywheel already though. egr's can get clogged if not used so a clean or blanking plate should sort it.

dont know prices of these but i cant see why not to go for it, atleast you know the bits have been done (and properly)

DMF's can fail early, thats why I hate them.

Worth going single mass IMOA. Our Golf runs one, and has done for the last 60k without noticable issue.

When you say EGR light, do you mean theres a "emission warning" on the dash? As Im sure theres no light, only a genral Engine managment warning light.

If it is definately the EGR thats at fault, it could need a clean (which means removing it) or replcement, which on the 1.9 isnt too hard really.

If a similar one without these faults is vastly more expensive then I would buy this one and fix her up. Good news would be you know its done properly and have a brand new clutch/flyhweel done.

Wouldn't own that shape of passat if you paid me. My dad and a friend both have one and have both been plagued with constant issues. My advice would be avoid it.

It is the emission warning light which is on.we thought it might have been something to do with the egr.

DMF is a consumable on a Diesel. Depends on how it's driven but between 60-80k seems to be where I hear most of them failing at.

I would try a diesel with a SMF before you swap, they're horrible and rattly *with* a DMF and some people have really regretted the extra nastiness with going the SMF flywheel route. There is also a chance of breaking gearboxes, crankshafts etc as part of the reason for the DMF is to cushion the blow of the diesel and allow a cheaper, lighter and more fragile gearbox. I'd certainly be very wary of remapping after swapping to an SMF.

EGR is probably clogged, they do actually make a difference on a diesel so I'd clean it up rather than remove/disable it.

Emissions light could mean lots of things. New sensor, new flow meter.....

Know my b-i-l had longstanding issues on a similar age Passat where they eventually agreed to replace all the injectors under goodwill (would have been about 4 years old at the time). He got it done then traded it in shortly after, as didn't feel the issues were completely gone.

Not saying this is the same at all BUT guessing the cause of an emissions warning light could be quite the expensive folly...

DMF on one. Autobox on another. Radiators popping on both. Injectors and both cars have had rather costly issues with the electronic handbrake both have had the switches changed as well as both motors, my friends one has had the motors changed twice, constant EGR issues and has spent in excess of 2k in 1 1/2 years.
