"But Mr Byers took the highly unusual step of approving the spending because he felt the move would serve the wider national interest.
Yesterday opposition MPs reacted angrily and said the decision was a "scandalous" use of taxpayers' money and accused the Government of giving Formula 1 special favours."
I wonder if that's why the socialist pigs got £1 million from Ecclescake????
And to hear that POV from Byers who is the labour-approved LIAR!!......WTF??????

I can see why they did it though. Despite everything we say about the current state of F1, it is still a major sporting event / spectacle, and there is an awful lot of money involved in it. It is one of those big events when an awful lot of influential eyes scrutinise our country, and UK PLC would have looked pretty stupid if the new road that was absolutely, positively, definitely going to be ready for the 2002 British Grand Prix wasn't actually ready. Wouldn't look too good for British Industry (what little we have left).
Sorry Jon, but you're missing the point here I think.
If a decision is made that it's for the greater good of the sport, industry whatever, then be UP FRONT about it and admit it.
Instead they go sneakily doing these things, Ecclescake makes underhand donations et voila, another sleaze escapade is born.
Don't be thinking that the timing of this story is accidental either. Some spin doctor will have leaked this out 'cos the Byers story has subsided somewhat, but he's still in the public memory and is a sufficient scapegoat to hang this whole sorry affair on without bLair getting too much sh1t thrown his way.
Bah.

So what? Did New Labour get anything out of it?? ummm Nope. So whats the fuss? We get a new road, Silverstone GP stays in the UK (cept we need a new airport for ecclescakes now
) and its a success
£8m - doesn't even count in the scheme of things, loose change!

If the road had been delayed, the GP had been a farce and GBlimited was once again humiliated you would all be attacking the Government for failing to get the work completed. Just for a change a politician uses his head rather than sticking to dubious cba formulas and he gets all sorts of abuse.
Ask JYS what he thinks about the decision.

I live at the A43/M40 end of the Silverstone road. The A43 to Silverstone was never going to be ready for 2002 F1. Even working around the clock the task was, and still is, going to take longer than a year.
For 2002, the A43 was opened as one way only. Unlike other years, the route from the M40 only went into Silverstone in the morning, and out in the afternoon. The same happened to the other end, i.e. from M1 am, to M1 pm.
The road immediatley went back to chaos after the F1. The hold ups on this road are beyond belief. The local radio this morning (07:00) was as usual giving out warnings about using the M40/A43 junction.
OK, so the road (dual carriageway), will be open for 2003. I don't know if the onw-way system will again be introduced for 2003 F1.
F1 is a major event, try getting traffic into/out of Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Donington Park etc. No way without major roadworks.
