Hi all,

Unfortunately, I am after a reputable repair specialist in the Nottingham area.

The fist and only time I've ever picked up the camera by the monopod, and not by the tripod mount, and the threaded spigot decided to separate from the pod and camera and lens met with the floor.

Luckily, it was only a fall of 4 or so inches and apart from cosmetic scratches (and a battered lens hood) all appeared well. That was until I tried to zoom the lens in and out - it's very stiff (but moveable) and makes a grinding noise when rotating it.

It seems to take pics OK, focusing is OK and the images are still sharp etc. but I'm loathed to use it while it's grinding.

So, can any of you fine people recommend a repair centre near Nottingham, please? Also, is it worth having the camera checked over too?

Canon 60D
Sigma 50-500 APO HSM lens

Would be covered under house insurance if repair too expensive/not viable to repair etc.

Many many thanks,
Scott

Is H. Lehmann in Stoke on Trent close enough for you? I haven't used them for repairs, but they've been really helpful with supplying spare parts for repairs I've done myself and they are a Canon authorised service facility.

Last time I visited Lehmanns they wouldn't touch my Sigma lens as they aren't an authorised repairer. I recently dropped my Sigma 120-300 and I just sent it straight to Sigma UK in Welwyn Garden City. The repair came to just over £300 although mine wouldn't focus at all so needed all sorts of bits replacing.

Thanks Jurek. How long was the turn around time for your repair?

The lens is probably only worth about 350 tops - at what point does the cost of repair become impractical?

I think I'll drop them an email, see if they can quote a ballpark figure if I describe the symptoms.

Thanks,
Scott

It only took a couple of weeks which was a relief as there was some talk of sending it back to Japan for something or other. I doubt they'll be much help until they actually see the lens so they'll probably insist you send it to them.

If you do that you'll obviously have to pay to send it there and then Sigma will charge you £15 to send it back if you don't want it repaired. I was lucky as I was working down that way so I was able to drop it in, they gave me an estimate whilst I waited and I left it with them.
