Importing a car from South Africa to the UK

Hi all

Does anyone have any experience in importing cars from South Africa into the UK? I am looking at purchasing a race car in the next couple of months and am trying to work out how much VAT and duty would need to be paid. I put in some details of the car on the duty calculator website http://www.dutycalculator.com/ and it says that there is 20% VAT to pay on the car but no duty.

The website says that the Racing car is duty free as EU-South Africa free trade agreement applies. Has anyone heard of this before and is that correct?

I'd say the VAT is only due if you're purchasing from a VAT registered trader? If you're buying from a private citizen then no VAT.

Dunno about the free-trade agreement.

The way I understood it is that when importing a car you pay duty and tax in the uk no matter if you've bought it privately or from a company in the country your importing from. It would be useful if I didn't have to pay the duty so need to understand the trade agreement.
