Strange phone call from insurer

I've never had this before and wonder if anyone else has.
My insurer called today, acknowledged my insurance isn't due for renewal but they just wanted to check they had all my details correct in readiness for their renewal quote. Fine on face value I guess, but my renewal date is over four months away!
Anyway, to be honest I couldn't remember if I was or wasn't insured with them so declined to answer the data protection security questions (which I almost always do anyway if someone calls me).
I googled the number when I got home and it does appear to be my insurer.
Why would they do this?

I was sat at my desk yesterday thinking when is my car insurance due for renewal, logged into my account and it was tomorrow!
I'd not heard a peep from em! The amount of random other streets mail I get through my door probably means that someone else has my renewal

I had the same - no sign of renewal quote and it's due in a few days.

The pessimist in me thinks they are probably looking for an excuse to retrospectively increase this years premium.
