McLaren Special Operations P1 for Pebble Beach

No further GTR news yet, just a very nicely specced 'normal' one for the Monterey crowds

What to do as a discerning McLaren P1 owner who craves something a little different to the other 374? Hand it to McLaren Special Operations, of course. Then ask when your GTR is coming.

Gold back on a McLaren!

The Sterling Grey P1 seen here will be presented at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as a display example for what MSO can do. It has been commissioned by a North American customer who we might say has superb taste.

McLaren Orange highlights feature throughout the car (have you spotted the badge on the wheelarch, just like the prototypes?) and there's additional carbon too because you can't have enough on a hypercar. The grey and orange theme continues inside where the seats have been fitted with four-point harnesses and there's a bespoke MSO wheel too. Again, it all works rather well.

And gold is back! Deliberately mimicking the F1, this P1 is fitted with 24-carat gold heatshields around the engine bay and inconel exhaust. Unfortunately McLaren hasn't released any pics of the engine.

But we're not fooled just yet McLaren. Everyone wants to know about GTR P1s now and those fettled by MSO a bit less. We'll keep you posted. And that other MSO McLaren will also be at Pebble Beach in Cerulean Blue if anyone is interested.

Pebble beach seems to be just another excuse for rich folk to show their well groomed cars in front of well groomed poodles.

At this rate I'm thinking the real hero might not be the P1 or TheFerrari or the 918 but a Veyron where the owner has changed the wheels and bespoke Michelins to some Rota wheels and skinnier normal Michelin tyres and then went thrashing it.... as time goes on I'm starting to like the Veyron more and more. It would be cheaper to run one of these now second hand into the ground than get one of these new uber cars if you worked out where the costs were and negated them

There was a great article in The Automobile on the Concours at the Villa d'Este recently. Clearly the author is no fan of the super-rich.

That's some lineup, and I don't mean just the McLarens in the foreground. Then again, it is Jay we're talking about...

Reminds me of the article a couple weeks ago about the lucky bd who owns the complete set of Ferrari supercars (288, F40, F50, Enzo, and LaF).

I always hate when I hear "reverse snobbery". I'm merely a peasant, but I know a fair few millionaires/billionaires and can tell you they're no different than the rest of us. They don't treat me any differently, either. It doesn't matter that I couldn't afford their shoes, let alone their cars, we're all car guys and that's all that matters.

I, for one, look forward to the day that I can attend Pebble Beach.

I agree whole heartedly. In fact when I have gone to shows, my favourite is in a well to do part of town, in a private schools courtyard, the people in the 200k cars are far nicer and willing to chat than the stuck up MG/triumph/jag owners who keep to their own. So assuming that people with expensive cars are all stuck up and just for show, rather than being true petrol heads, is just dead wrong. Look at some of the vids of Pebble beach, lots awesomely impractical, undignified racings cars there, getting use and raced regularly.

Do you really expect people that spend x millions on a one of twelve Maserati to be wearing Primark jeans and meet in a pub car park? Not really. Concourse of elegance, so elegant cars, elegant surroundings. Makes sense. Makes it an occasion rather than just a common or garden meet.

I chatted with some of the many Ferrari F40 owners who got to Silverstone Classics a few years. They were a brilliant bunch of guys. Proper car people. And a right mix of people, from a multimillionaire who had a collection of super cars, to a guy who worked hard and owned a 10 year old Ford Focus and hes Ferrari F40. Not a lot of money just spent it all on an F40. How cool is that!

That's rather awesome, if you can live simply for a decade then it is definitely do able on the right salary.
