I do hope you're enjoying your evening, me? I'm just tucking in to a lovely chicken curry I defrosted today.

With fresh spaghetti.

Not bad actually, this Indian/Italian fusion thing may just catch on, nom nom and all that. bowtie

Well I had the remanents of a Chinese curry sauce in the fridge after making a replica of a Wagamama Katsu curry the other night, M&S chicken breast in breadcrumbs, boiled rice, aforementioned curry sauce.

Tonight rest of curry sauce stir fried up with a bit of veg and udon noodles. Cheap, quick, v tasty. Mmmmmm.

Ah yes, freezer surprise! Only last week I defrosted some curry from the freezer and cooked some rice to go with it. It was only once it had defrosted I realised it was actually a minestrone soup. Soup, with rice for desert, is not the greatest meal in the world.

My mother in law tells tale of when the kids were young they weren't well off and to save money she used to buy discounted tins of stuff where the label had come off.

Mrs Fif confirms there were some interesting combinations.

My "chicken curry" turned out to be apple puree. Not the best with basmati rice and a naan.

On a small cruising yacht on a long trip in the tropics, you have to take all the cardboard packaging off food or cockroaches can live in it. This is also true of labels on cans. Take label off the can, write what it is in felt tip, then varnish the tins to stop corrosion.

Now one crew member was in charge of this but forgot the felt tip pen part. So, come meal time, we had a 150 to 1 chance at Heinz roulette.

Meatballs and custard really doesn't go well together. yuck

No seriously, it is! I make a Mexican chilli lasagne with tortilla wraps in place of lasagne sheets and chilli in place of bolognase.

Made even better when one of you is a veggie biggrin

I'm (not the veggie) on freezer surprise duty next week. Will probably be for a month judging by the amount of frozen blocks of chilli/stew/tagine/curry/apple/lasagne/rhubarb/etc we appear to have in the freezer. And that's before I start looking at unusual cuts of meat!

Closest I've ever got to this was using jam instead of cranberry in a turkey sandwich, that was labelled too!

I remember my Gran going absolutely batst mental at me for mixing up the salt and sugar at their temporary rented house (theirs was getting the underfloor heating fixed along with damp proofing), and accidentally putting salt on my cornflakes. The tubs were exactly the same, and this one was next to the tea and coffee making stuff by the kettle. The other was next to the pepper grinder by the cooker. I was about ten.

She almost made me eat them "to teach me a lesson" until my Grandad remembered that this house had one of those sink garbage disposal things that chopped stuff up, and he was yet to find a use for it.

I grew up thinking cornflakes must cost about £20 a box, and skimmed milk was more expensive than champagne.

My dear departed Mum used to buy loose shortbread mix and loose mashed potato powder from a health food store. Both came in identical brown paper bags.

You can guess what happened next... vomit

When I was younger my Auntie came round and, being the dutiful nephew, I offered her a coffee.

For some bizarre reason my Mum decided to store the gravy granules in the same cupboard as the coffee & tea so my Auntie got a nice hot mug of gravy instead
