getting money out of a dealer

Hi there, to what extent can you get money out of a dealer for repairs, say you bought a 7 year old car with 95000 miles on it and was described as immaculate but then you find the following things wrong within the first month:

Worn turbo (not blown but had it inspected and it has a lot of play etc)
Coolant leak from radiator (new radiator needed)
New pads needed
Head gasket gone (not confirmed yet but i cant personally see a leak)


Which ones could you claim for saying its not fit for purpose??

Also could you get the repairs done yourself and send them the reciept or would you have to take it to them to be repaired (bear in mind the fault might break the car getting it to the dealer)

The dealer legally has the right to examine the car, and if he feels he is liable for the "faults" (ie, not general wear and tear) then he can either repair, refund or replace.

You cant just get the work done and bill him.

Sorry, but I don't think ANY of them are grounds for rejection.

Pads - maintenance consumable.
Worn turbo - it's a 7yo car with 95k on it. Turbos wear.
Rad - corrosion? Not exactly unexpected on a 7yo car. Stone damage? Could have happened any time in the last month.
Head gasket - if you've run it low on coolant...

As others have said, you can't just get the work done and expect them to pay for it. Also all but the rad are really consumables.

Checking a turbo at purchase is a bit tricky. ALl you can really do is listen for whistling, watch for exhaust smoke and see if the car is down on power. Pads you could check at the dealer at the time or purchase. No excuse for that IMO. Its one of the first things I do when I'm looking round a car.
