Underpowered cars
Discussion
Which cars do you consider to be underpowered when you compare the engine that they have with the size of car its in. Or in other words, cars which are underpowered for the type of car they are e.g. family hatch or people carrier.
Also another category, cars which are underpowered compared to other cars in the same class. e.g. Aston Martin(all of them) in the super car class.

In 2014 you can buy a brand new Polo with a 1.0 60HP engine that takes over 15 seconds to hit 60. You would have to be pretty desperate to own one, likewise the BMW 114. Pointless.
Drivel - These cars are perfectly suitable for some people. (Although these people may not reside in here...)Vyse said:

OK, I'll feed the troll:I'll listen to your argument when you explain to us, from your own person experience, which Aston models are underpowered (compared to others in your "supercar" class.
We're keen to learn your views. So tell us! Which Aston (that you've driven), feels underpowered to another "supercar" that you've driven?

Come off the Grange roundabout at full throttle in a modern 1.2 Corsa and try to make it up Lindale Hill without slowing to fully laden HGV pace. I found it frankly disturbing that a modern car couldn't maintain over 60mph given appropriate use of the throttle and gears. The f
ker is too heavy for the engine.

The old 1.3CDTi Astra was dreadful. Barely strong enough to drag itself along with one passenger, never mind a full compliment and a bootful! It was also a complete disaster to drive, with a laggy throttle and awful gearing which produced yawning chasms in the 'power'. Grim stuff.
Indeed. Good response, a useful torque curve and suitable gearing can make a big difference. It's not about the peak power. The rental car spec Insignia 1.8 petrol was also fairly rubbish in day-to-day driving, but claimed 140bhp.
Although it wasn't 'dangerously slow' if you revved the nuts off it in low gears, with presumably about 10bhp below about 5000rpm.

...but do you actually *need* to be able to do 60mph up there?
