Anyone know if there's any issue bringing car parts back through customs? Need to bring a light cluster back for the porker.

Ditto, no worries.
I even brought a red top (race) battery, but I did make sure i had the MSDS and shipping documents.

I put land rover steps, power steering pipes etc in my hand lugguge, no issues at all (even though they checked my hand luggage for alcohol and opened all the boxes)

Thats strange, I took a couple of bucket seat brackets back in hand luggage, or at least tried and I had them taken from me and I was told I'd have to check them in or lose them.

I've flown with all sorts of car parts, sometimes I need to explain to a group of security staff what they are, but that's been about the only issue.

hand luggage is trickier. first time i discovered that you can't fly with hand tools was on the way to the barca 24h with several hundred quids worth of socket set.

as rich says, for anything which may require an msds make sure you have one copy in your hand and one with the goods. never had to open a case but always get sent to have my bags scanned by the supervigilant crew at t1. one day they might stop talking long enough to look at the xray screen.
