Used Car Warranty - problems less than a week after purchase
Discussion
Bought a used car last Monday from a dealer.
(over £3000- 2006 plate with just above 70k miles)
the car was driven from the dealer to my home and then hasn't been moved until yesterday when we nipped out in it.
the problems I have are:
1. faulty seat
2. a single loud knock as the car comes to a stop from above 20 mph
3. a series of very quiet knocks at slow speed/start offs
4. intermittent battery warning light.
The seat he has agreed to replace.
the knocking needs to be investigated further to find out the cause..
the battery light we had a test done
results:
battery is fine
alternators output is too low.
however RAC have just tested it and they say its fine.
my car has a smart charge system so Im thinking it could be that.
problem is, the dealer wants the car back to repair it ( 100 miles away )
and has said he is legally entitled to repair it at his property.
does anybody know the law on that?
because without the car having a reliable alternator I am not driving it.
thanks all.

i think it depends on what warranty it is. i bought my mum a 307cc with a warrantywise warranty and it was fixed at nearest place at an agreed price we then applied for the money back (and got it promptly) her auto wiper module went and was a gearbox off job?!?
i bought a pup a few years back (seat leon cupra) from a dealer about 60 miles away and had to have it repaired there or pay for the investigation and they'd pay the repairs, due to my cynicism i felt it best to leave them too it.

As I understand it, you bought a car from a dealer, who therefore has various obligation to you, which are enforced by law. I think these allow him to attempt to make good / repair your car. It's reasonable he does ths from a similar location to where it was sold.
You may have also purchased a warrenty, which is a contract between you and another party. What this entitles you to doesn't affect the garage's obligations and its defined by the product and the T&Cs / contract you signed with them. This may allow you to have you car fixed elsewhere, but in so doing you will not have allowed the garage to attempt to fix it and probably weaken any claim against the selling garage.

Yep - you must give the supplying dealer the chance to fix any problems. This is the downside of buying a car 100 miles away; was there nothing closer to home? Is it summat rare?
This. When will people realise that if you buy a car 100 miles away, the dealer you bought it from is still 100 miles away when you have a problem.

The vast majority of third-party warranties that I've come across do not start until 30 days after purchase. The only exception I've found was an extension to a manufacturers warranty which still had to be bought more than 30 days before the substantive warranty ended.andymc said:
