Checking oil pump

How do I check my oil pump whilst it's still in the car, I suspect it's broken as the engine gets really warrm and stays warm for hours after a local slow journey, and there's a fair amount of rattling on the top of the engine.

I've taken the oil cap off whilst the engine was running and cannot see any oil moving around

Best way would be to get an oil pressure gauge hooked into the low oil pressure warning sender. That way at least you can see what the oil pressure's like.

Last time I needed to check one. I took the rocker cover off and started the car. Don't do this on a nice drive! As it happens there was no oil getting to the top of the engine.
