Attention all turbo nutters
Discussion
What cam's are you chaps running? Anyone who's fitted a turbo been recommended a particular cam by those in the know? I'm guessing a number of turbo installs have stuck with what's already fitted (if it wasn't a lairy jobbie), but wondering if there's a 'this is the cam to have' thing going on anywhere...
Just curious

Mick, not seen you since the MS/Pod day last year, you had your monster on a rolling road yet?
No mate, shredded my clutch at Pod then spent the winter months stepping suspension, shot blasting and repainting, new bushes etc before getting clutch fitted. Local guy ballsed it up so Colin came to the rescue and helped me do it myself. Many beers owed. Just got back on the road after service and goe last week.Think ill be on a RR soon. Should be good numbers
Running very sweet now though.

I'd be guessing he's going through one of his what if stages that occur several time a year

must be an off-shore thing.

Still with the original, it was in good health so no need to change when I had the turbo fitted.[/quote

Would a worn cam work better with a turbo or supercharger ?
Daz, I think most people have come to expect 'curved ball' posts from your much abused keyboard, but FFS... However, just as a suggestion, try posting that question in general gassing and see what kind of response you get ]

That said, there's probably a lot of folk in general gassing that don't know what a cam is

C'mon' Chilli, spill the beans.
Oh alright then...
Goes back to discussions I had with Rob some time back about installing a SC (was going to buy Hoofa's old one), we got to a point where we were thinking never mind the high CR and lairy cam, lets just bolt it on and map accordingly....
The turbo kit, being somewhat cheaper (sorry, less expensive) than the SC kit is very tempting, and I'm seriously considering giving it a go without lowering the CR or changing the cam, which has more overlap than you'd really want for FI. That said, putting a new cam in isn't really a big deal, hence the original question... Lowering the CR is a bigger deal, and three ways of achieving it (as far I'm aware), decompression plates (I don't want to do this), different heads (Rob offered to buy my stage 4 500 heads), or what I consider to be the 'proper' route, LC pistons (but then that's humongously expensive). I know the numbers won't quite stack up, but I've considered the following points: 1) If it doesn't work well enough I can take the turbo off and flog it on - probably only minor loss leaving labour out of the equation.. 2) If it does work I can flog my ACT triple and CliveF Y which will make the end cost very palatable.. 3. Even at low boost it should (hopefully) take power and torque into the 400's 4. A Xover manifold with ITB's is the only real next step if staying NA, and they're 3 grand plus (more than a turbo kit) and won't give a big increase in power...
So that's it really..... I haven't modified anything on beastie since last year, so I'm also getting withdrawal symptoms... waking up sweating in the middle of the night, having nightmares about turbo diesels, and even worse, dreaming I've bought a Griff off ebay

Cool, well we all know Daz is after your plenum so that wont hang around. You could try low boost kit and I know Eann is working on one. Go on, you know you want to! You will of course have to come out in mine some day, just ask Daz what it's like. Daz, I think I understand why you asked...Disclaimer: the following is my postulation based on my understanding of the principles - awaits a good rebuttle

As Derek said, a worn cam would decrease your lift ("vertical wear" of the lobe centre->tip), and to a smaller degree, the cams duration ("horizontal wear" of the lobe "ramp").
However, what it won't change is the intake lobe's angle on the shaft relative to the exhaust lobe's angle on the shaft - which is what determines the overlap.
Overlap, being effectively the amount of time the inlet & exhaust valves are both open - is what you want to minimise on an FI engine as otherwise you just force air/fuel mix straight through the cylinder out into the exhaust = less charge in the cylinder = less power.
Its the overlap (intake/exhaust lobe angles relative to each other) which you need to change - and a worn cam has no effect on that, only affecting the lift/duration.
You still want the lift and duration for FI (AFAIK), just not the overlap - so a worn cam would have the worst of both worlds: retaining the poor overlap characteristics, but now with less lift/duration to get the air/fuel mix in in the first place.
