Cooling system, or lack of!!!!

Basically HELP. A couple weeks ago, it ran hot (120+) on the gauge within 5 miles from home, Engine hot, radiator cold. Suspected thermostat. Advice was possibly air lock. Decided that it was a good time to give the system an overhaul. Thus silicone hoses, thermostat and water pump. All the old parts looked serviceable, thus the air lock advice looked to be the culprit.
I have tried the bible way, adding the funnel to the swirl pot and jacking the front of the car up. All to no joy. It 'burps through the funnel but the engine just gets hotter and hotter and the rad stays cold. Eventually the hoses and swirl pot get hot through what I believe is convection, but the rad stays cool. It is though the water is not circulating. Also when the system is together it does not pressurise as it warms up, squeezing the top hose brings 'gurgling' noises.
I am convinced it is air in the system, but how do I get it out.

PS heater is set to hot all the time and the heater seams to work!!

Have you bled the radiator? If so, sounds like a blocked radiator or pipe somewhere.

Is there a block in the rad? Have to tried taking it out and have it pressure tested?

I seem to remember a thread on here where someone found the narrow pipe from the top of their swirl pot was blocked. The hole was full of crud so the water wasn't circulating.

Have you tested the thermostat? Remove the dizzy,then the thermostat housing, take out the thermostat and place it into a cup of boiled water. If it opens, then you know it is working and you can start looking elsewhere for the problem.

It sounds as if the water isn't circulating.

This would my first thought. There should be a bleed point on the top corner of the rad. You need to loosen this off and let any air out.

Many thanks for the comments, Thermostat, hoses and water pump are all new in an attempt to solve the issue. As Chuffmeister indicates it would appear that the water is not circulating. Of concern is that all the replaced parts, thermostat and pump were serviceable. My next attempt will be to check the rad for circulation, hopefully tomorrow afternoon.

Is it possible that the old thermostat was goosed and you have put the new thermostat in upside down ?

I believe the thermostat was fitted correctly, spring side into the engine block.

Hopefully if the rain stops I'll get out there this afternoon to have another play.

Sadly you cannot rely on a component just because it is new; there is a lot of crap out there these days. I suppose you know for sure the impeller is rotating in the new pump.

Serp or Pre-serp ..as the Serpentine belt can be put on the wrong way around and rotate the pump the wrong direction.

Try running it without the thermostat to eliminate that as an issue. I had my faulty one replaced by a garage and the new one was also faulty so just because its new doesnt mean its working properly.

As Adrian says it wouldn't be the first time a serp belt had been fitted incorrectly, but the op stated it was running hot before he changed the pump and therefore removed the belt, certainly worth checking though.
