What Car - Black Estate for a Funeral Director.

I have a budget of £3k and need a vehicle which to use in my Funeral Business. It needs to be as new as possible, as low mileage as possible and be a black estate - oh, and take a 6ft Coffin / Stretcher in the back.

I've looked at the the usual Mondeo and Volvo examples and they're tired and leggy at that budget to say the least.

I throw it out to the community of Pistonheads - find me a mortuary vehicle...

If the vehicle is just for collections and going to the mortuary then why not get a black van rather than an estate?

I set an autotrader search to £3k black estate. Outside the Ford/Vauxhall stuff there's Merc C Class, BMW 3 series, Jag X Type and SAAB 9 3. Not sure which of those will be big enough or suitable enough. As above, if it's for, um, deliveries, and not the final journey, a van?

A black van is not an option for doing out of hours work. It looks unsightly and undignified.

Most if the black estates mentioned cannot take the length needed in the load area. Good shout on the Honda and Subaru - worth checking out.

It's your business but I am not sure a 3 grand estate is any more dignified than a van. Most funeral directors round here seem to have them in grey or black with a discrete private ambulance sign. Plenty of room for the larger bodies and you can't see inside.

Absolutly not a van, Living in a country where vans are used as a herse they look awfull, I know you are not going to use it for the funeral itself, but I've been to a few expat funerals were the body arrived in a van and the look on face of the family members that travel from Europe is distressing. My wife is under instructions that if its only a van then she is to use my Hilux, (which is black with a hardtop) rather than the van.
