AC Cobra Replicas. WIll £30K get anything decent?

They are cool looking for sure. I know the Gardner Douglas models are supposedly some of the best in terms of driving like more modern cars (rigid chassis, body mounted on anti vibration mounts etc). I've not looked into it much though. I'm sure your healthy budget will get something great.
Firstly you need to decide which AC Cobra you are interested in. Basically there are three types. The 289, the 289 FIA and the 427.
The 289 was the original and probably the prettiest with it's wire wheels, The 289 FIA was the racing version and started to grow larger wheel arches and Halibrand wheels whilst the 427 is the later American version which was on steroids and the most popular with the kit car enthusiasts.
Really there are plenty to choose from if going down the 427 route, but if you want authenticity then the 289/289 FIA is the way to go.
Take your time in deciding what you want and what you are going to use it for, there are plenty with huge powerful engines which makes them a handful to drive on the road, especially when damp. Make sure that any car you are thinking of buying has been correctly registered and has been through a SVA/IVA test.
Your £30k budget should get you a decent car, especially at the end of the year when selling a Cobra isn't easy, and finally have a look at some of the specific websites such as http://www.the289register.com/ or http://www.cobraclub.com/

I can offer no advise other than to try and get to any shows where there are Cobra rep owners and tap them up for advise. I'm sure a lot of it will be contrary to each other but you should get a decent picture of where everything falls into place. Owners love talking about their cars, the dos and don'ts and it'll certainly help you out, plus, where else will you be able to compare cars side by side?
