I've recently retired (at a young age) from a job running large IT projects in a large organisation.
I'm fit and active and I'd like to contribute something back to society.
I've searched for volunteering jobs but all I can come up with in the IT world seems to be dismantling PCs, rebuilding then and sending them to developing countries. I could easily do that but I'd prefer something more challenging.
Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do?

Many MIND branches offer computer training to assist people back to work and may require volunteers - http://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/local-m...
Other local charities may offer similar to people with other illnesses or problems.

saying at a young age ( 50s or ?even younger, the being PH and all) means you have a lot of options especially if you would be open to something differing from what you have done in work or something where you combine IT work with other things... I'm fit and active and I'd like to contribute something back to society.

a lot of volunteer organisatiosn are crying out for good project managers - most of my service improvement and project management experience has been gained in my volunteer work

In my spare time, I'm chairman of a Community Radio station of which there are many in the UK.
All struggle to various degree with IT and tech. The majority are run on a voluntary basis and need good IT support to keep broadcasting.
IT covers the computers that are used to prepare and broadcast shows and the software as well as broadcast technology and techniques which is very interesting for those of the right mind.

I hadn't thought of project management or community radio. I'll investigate both.
Refurbishment of PCs and sending them off abroad seems strange when most of the work seems to be cleaning PCs and checking that they work. It seemed to me that such work would probably be better done in the countries that are receiving them (after a quick check to make sure that they aren't scrap before they ship).

probably becasue of a perception that doing the work down journey would mean that anything decent would be 'leaked' out of system at the warehouse / refurb plant I hadn't thought of project management or community radio. I'll investigate both.

there may also be Information security reasons ( or more to the point why corporate donors (and their none IT specialist senior managers) might be uncertain over donating machines) why the refurbs are done 'here' - especially if it's proper wipe of hard drive and installation of legit copies of OS and software
there is of course the option of volunteering in something completely new , which may or may not use your IT and prokject manager skills peripherally.
