Helped required with gearbox fault- The solenoid on top of the gearbox is stopping me being able to select a gear. It is basically stuck in neutral.

Thanks in advance, asking on behalf of a friend in Australia.

There is no solenoid on the T5 box, on top or anywhere else! Whatever is preventing it from shifting is a mechanical problem. It would be guesswork to attribute a cause without inspecting the box, so it needs removing from the car and dismantling.

Is this the case with the engine running only, or also with the engine stopped? If it can be pushed in to gear with the engine off it's a clutch release problem. If it's just stuck in neutral whatever you do then it's a mechanical gearbox problem as Tanguero says.

Is there a security feature that can stop gear selection?

I will ask tomorrow more when at work but the way he described it was there was some kind of pin not being released.

He said also the clutch pedal feels fine.

There is no such security feature. The clutch pedal doesn't feel too bad even if the hydraulics are leaking, or indeed if it's broken fingers on the cover plate.

If it is a clutch issue it should go in and out of gear with the engine off. If the stick is just jammed solid then the gearbox itself is damaged.

No there isn't any form of interlock on the T5 WC, either electrical or mechanical. The only thing that could prevent the lever from moving if the clutch is OK is a mechanical failure of some sort.

The T5 is straightforward to strip down and rebuild, the rebuild manual is available on line. (http://www.flatheadv8.org/T5Service.pdf see also http://www.flatheadv8.org/T5Rebuild.pdf)

Thanks for the help so far...

I showed him the manual and he said there is definitely an alarm solenoid there as he has already rewired it once, he is just after the part number for it. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think he needs to get himself in here with a few pics of what this offending item is.

Could be an ex-owner security addition or just that he's looking at something totally unrelated.

Sorry but he is mistaken, there absolutely is no solenoid on the standard T5 WC box !

The only electrical connection to the gearbox is the reverse switch about half way down on the left hand side. If that has seized it can prevent the box from shifting into reverse, but all the other gears will select ok.

What part number on which diagram in the manual is he talking about?

This 100% I have had the gearbox out and re built no electronics apart from the reverse switch, but could be something aftermarket.
