ALARM AND IMMOBILISER. REPAIR OR REPLACE?

Hello all.
Since I have owned my '97 Chimaera there have been alarm and immobiliser problems.
Occasionally it would not start but now that is most of the time, hot or cold.
A Modwise kit has been fitted and a new starter too but I am 99% sure the problem is the immobiliser.
The alarm will not work correctly either, the siren is U/S and the range, despite new batteries in the remotes is terrible!
My question is should I replace like for like from someone like Abacus Alarms or start from scratch and fit a new system? The local TVR specialist suggests Cobra alarms which they get fitted but has anyone got any ideas or experience of any other makes? Both Toad and Clifford look interesting options.
I am happy to fit the alarm myself. I am not looking for anything fancy, just remote locking, immobilisation and hopefully a boot release.

+1 for Carl, although he lives in France now, so not as available as some, but he does come back to do work at Taylor TVR i think.

One of the first things i did when i bought my 2001 Chim was bin the existing alarm system & upgrade to a new system, all types wear out & cause lots of issues. They need to be seen as a maintenance item like tyres, not a fit & forget item.
A friend of mine sold his Griff as the faulty immobiliser drove him nuts with frustration, not starting when he wanted to go out, or at petrol stations etc, whereas other times it was ok.
Replace it, also if Carl finds anything else under the dashboard he'll tell you & it may be able to be fixed quickly at the same time.

If you're capable of doing it yourself I wouldn't bother with the original alarm, it was hardly the height of technology when it was new. I keep on eyeing up one of the viper alarms.. http://www.viper.com/
Remote start, key fob works as a pager so you can control it/get alarm status from miles away, and with a newer system you'll be able to have full closure on the windows and be able to open the boot etc..

Shame it doesn't say on the site, how much they are to buy...Yeah, either ebay or most car alarm places sell them. Shop around a bit and a bargain quite often pops up, you can buy basic ones and add on to them with the pager and extra boxes to control different things.. so you don't really need to spend much as there isn't much to control on a chimaera, 2 windows and a boot

Clifford/Viper/Avital are owned by the same parent company and are basically the same components in different boxes, the only difference between them are the features that you can have. They normally roll out the most high end stuff with a Clifford label on it and filter it down to Avital who get the basic stuff.
I've seen people plug Viper stuff into Clifford boxes and it work fine.

I've got a habit of spending an hour searching through ebay/amazon etc for random stuff that I'll want in the future, quite a few viper alarms have popped up cheap on ebay as ex stock/people selling them on after buying them and never fitting them. Just be careful to read what's in the box when you see a really cheap one as sometimes they sell the pager fob separately and just give you the basic button one as the pagers sell for £60ish
