Judge Rinder rules re: complaint about private car sale

Just seen on ITV what I believe is a new UK version of a 'Judge Judy' type program where criminal barrister Robert Rinder (camper than Trecco Bay) rules on various cases that the public bring to his court.

Today's episode - (might get repeated later) involved an ebay sale of an 116K mile Jaguar which developed a fault a few days after the sale. Interestingly the advert said it was in very good condition inside and out but the Judge asked the seller if he was in anyway a mechanical expert and had he sold cars before on ebay - he wasn't and he hadn't.

The complainant produced all sorts of invoices for repairs and expenses but the Judge asked him if he heard of 'caveat emptor' which he hadn't and had it explained to him. Ruling in favour of the seller with no award to the complainant whatsoever.

Lots of bhing by the complainant to camera after the show and to the seller about buying bananas for the judge and 'I think he likes you' Ooh er!

It would be great to get that episode put on youtube and a link to it could be provided each time we get a private buyer on here complaining about something wrong with their car.

Correct - which is why the title specifically mentions 'private car sale'.

i was every disappointed, it was rubbish
since any barrister can elect themselves a judge on ITV, can we not suggest they replace this guy with breadvan?

Nope When I first saw this being advertised as being filmed and a suspicious lack of BV on these forums at the time, I thought it might be, but he didn't look old enough to be BV

didn't realise but it was the very first episode. I suspected he wasn't a full blown judge but I guess the participants agree to be bound by his decisions beforehand and probably get paid in to the bargain too. Judge Judy like this is on for our entertainment but I'll bet it will have some amusing moments - he particularly doesn't like being spoken over.

I did like it when he warned one of the witnesses not to lie as 'I can smell a lie like a fart in a lift'

Wonder why they didn't get a civil barrister to "rule" on civil matters..

The parties probably do get paid, and they presumably agree to what is in effect an arbitration agreement (arbitration is a form of contractual dispute resolution process- the parties agree to accept the decision of the arbitrator as final*). This TV dude is not any sort of a Judge, let alone a full blown one, and nothing he decides has any precedential bearing on the typical PH car purchase wingeathon scenario.



* An arbitration award can be challenged in court only on very limited grounds. Commercial arbitration is a mega big business, but the same rules apply even to tinpot disputes about fk all.

The guy bought a Jag, from a guy selling on ebay then when he got it home there was a problem with the engine on it, it was only 12 years old and done 100k+ miles, the guy said it was in excellent condition inside and out. He didn't get anything because the judge was an idiot and something about bananas

Before that a fat woman had a photographer, who failed to make her look like anything other than a hideous fat woman and ruined her wedding!
She got half her money back as he had to go home early because he shat himself so could not photograph the evening reception.

Imagine this vision, only 10 stone heavier. How the lens didn't crack is beyond me.
