Low Mileage Cooper S vs High Mileage Mk5 Golf GTI

Looking to buy a new car. Been looking at hot hatches and driving a few in my budget and have basically come down to these two cars.
I have about £5k - £5.5k. With this budget i could pick up a 04/05 Cooper S with 50k on the clock with a bit of searching or a Golf GTI with about 100k on the clock.
Just curious to opinions on which car is better or people who have owned either car at low or high mileage and have an idea reliability wise how they cope?

I've had a GTI and now have an MCS.
They are very different cars. The MCS is really good fun, it's like a little rollerskate. The Golf is more grown up, much more comfortable & really comes alive when you want it to. If I had to choose one I would go for the Golf I would want to see evidence of TLC on a higher mileage one & make sure it feels tight. Any sloppyness in the steering, suspension or gear shift points to some work needed.

As has been said the GTI is more together and grown up. It will also be quicker if not up against a JCW.
Plus side on Mini is supercharger sound and will be lower miles - but this doesnt mean less prone to fault, Mini's have issues of thier own. A 2005 or 2006 car is your best bet as this is when quality hit peak and issues where ironed out.
I hear of MK5 GTI's on 100k going strong but make sure it has a folder of history and the cambelt and water pump has been done.

R53 Mini's don't have that many issues tbh.
They are awesome fun to drive, even a standard Cooper is IMHO.
I've just sold my leggy but immaculate Cooper but I want to get a MCS at some point.
They are an infectious little car; one of my true favourites from the 50+ cars I've owned over the years.
I'll miss the Cooper massively until such a time that I can justify buying the MCS....

Mk5 GTI every day of the week, much better all-rounder. Just as quick and much better interior quality and refinement. 100,000 miles on a mk5 GTI really isn't that bad, there's another 50,000 in there easy before I'd think about getting rid of it. Just make sure that the service history is solid and everything that needs to be done has been, and you'll be golden.

The GTi has the predictable and safe understeer, a great car but the Mini is just sublime in handling (IMHO).
They are such different cars, you need to drive both and see which floats your boat.
