Which beaches can you drive on?

Hello all,

I've always wanted to drive my car on a beach, even more so now I have something rear wheel drive. Are there any beaches in the UK that you're still allowed to drive on?

I'm based around the South Wales area but I'd travel to get some nice photos,

Frazer Island is excellent - I hit about 75 on the hard sand.

Is Pendine Sands allowed, I know you can park on it?

You can drive down the slipway at Penarth Beach, but the sand is very clayey and the beach is very public, so I don't think RWD antics would be applauded.

That takes me back! Used to thrash around on the beach at St Osyths many years ago, doubt it's allowed now though.

You used to be able to drive on the beach at Weston-Super-Mud, sorry I mean Mare. In fact I think some of it was operated as a car park

Beach in Porthmadog in North Wales is good fun and you're allowed to drive on it. Access next to the golf club.

Could always throw in a trip to Snowdonia the same day.

That sounds ideal, is there a cost or can you just drive on?

The last time I was up that way I was in my mk1 swift sport, some fantastic roads!

I've driven on the beach at Brean (near Weston) but it does have a 20mph limit. I think the Top Gear driving is done on closed off areas.

My FiL has an amusing anecdote about this.

He was a roving manager/troubleshooter for new Tesco stores and was one day ordered down to Weston at short notice. He wondered what had happened to let's say, Fred, Chris and the young apprentice but didn't think to much of it.

He duly arrived at Weston, asked what had happened to his colleagues, to be told all three were in Hospital.

It seems that Fred thought it was a good idea to take the company car for a blast on the beach one night, but it seems he failed to appreciate that other people use the beach during the day. Especially people that like digging on the beach, especially big holes around sand castles, that seem to be especially designed just to make cars roll over, at speed.

Anyway before driving on a beach check for holes.

Which is the correct name for the beach at Porthmadog. In season, during the day its a few quid to get on but out of season or early or late its free.

Not local but Daytona beach is awesome, the only beach I've driven on!

Almost managed to get our hire car Jeep Cherokee stuck so it pays to be a bit cautious!
