3rd gear from low rpm? (400)
Discussion
Just wondering how others with a 400 find pulling away from say 1,200 rpm in 3rd?
Is it shunty / lumpy? Or fairly smooth?
I find it pretty shunty up until nearly 2,000rpm, not that I do it often, just trying to work out how smooth the car should be (and using an extreme case to compare).

When I say this though, I'm not meaning 1,200 rpm and foot to the floor, if I start at WOT it's not a problem.
If I try this at maybe 1/4 throttle though, I see it starting to shunt, and all smoothness is gone.
If I drop a gear though, I have no problem.
Does that sound normal?
If not, any ideas as to what could be up?

Don't think you have a problem at all. If I try this at maybe 1/4 throttle though, I see it starting to shunt, and all smoothness is gone.

Better to change down and avoid straining the engine un-neccessarily. Yes, I can and have pulled away in third from a junction by slipping the clutch, but only by mistake! The issue may be that the T5 gear box has a bigger gap between second and third than between other gears, and so it does tend to bog down a bit if you change up too soon, hence you become aware of it.
Incidentally the best advice for fuel economy in any car in town driving is not to try to go everywhere in the highest gear possible, a lower gear is more economical.

Morning QBee,I've never heard of that before, who's advice is that coming from? Is it something you have read.

Yes, I heard it on a speed awareness course and remembered it because it struck me as counter intuitive. However, it must be good advice because my TVR gets far more smiles per gallon
around town if I go everywhere in second gear and let it over-run regularly.....Makes sense to me as driving around town is all about getting the car moving, just starting to build momentum and then braking. High gears are good for maintaining momentum. Try riding a bike round town in a really high gear and your legs will feel it, but riding at 30mph in a high gear you are just keeping the pedals turning, adding what friction and air resistance is taking away.

You learn something new everyday.
around town if I go everywhere in second gear and let it over-run regularly.....I'm now in the same club as you Anthony,2nd gear 1st when ever i can through towns as I've gone sleeved(I know yours is not)

Still doesn't seem to make sense this style of driving compared to 3rd gear without hardly any throttle
but bigger smiles are achieved in lower gears and don't care if I gain a few or loose a few mpg
PS OP.... Mine runs smooth in low gears however I apply the throttle. I do run mine on Shell V power... some say makes no difference but I'm convinced it just runs better on the good stuff... But each to their own.

is very slight, I'm maybe just being paranoid.
Was thinking of investing in the ACT Elbow to see if it smooths things out a little, but as I say, I'm just being a perfectionist, it's really not a major issue.
I do have the ACT Elbow, silicone hoses and induction hose fitted. Whether it makes any difference I could't tell you.Was thinking of investing in the ACT Elbow to see if it smooths things out a little, but as I say, I'm just being a perfectionist, it's really not a major issue.
