Morning all
I currently work as a manager in Credit Risk for a UK financial lender. My role involves data analysis, model development and portfolio risk forecasting. I've been in related roles for 8 years and looking for a change. I don't think I'm well suited to a team-management role (although I'm pretty competent) and would like to move towards a technical specialist role without line-management responsibility. My background before working in Risk was a PhD; I find that I work best on my own or as part of a small team and I'm not natural 'leader'.
Although I still enjoy the analytics part of my role (when I'm not in meetings!) I'm finding myself drawn more towards the visual/design elements of my role, for example creating presentations, designing user-interfaces and tools etc. Thinking back to my PhD (Physics) I always took a keen interest in the visual side of things and wanted to make my results stand out visually. I want to retain a certain amount of analytics and not focus purely on the design side of things, but I think a blend of the two would be a perfect role for me.
I've seen a recent explosion in 'Data Visualisation' across various industries. The Press use very visual graphics now to connect with their readers and I'm always drawn to these stories. I was wondering if anyone has experience of working in data visualisation or could offer suggestions for me to investigate further.

Do you want to design data visualisation techniques or use them?
A few areas that have really started to draw on data visualisation techniques, in my perception, include the following areas where analysis of large datasets is required:
customer insight
social network analytics (SNA)
fraud analytics
With your current background, a move to financial fraud analytics is probably going to be the easiest to explore, but customer insight is also a very quickly growing area as far as I can see, particularly in the financial and insurance sectors
