Went out on the terrace for lunch and spotted this on one of the palm trees. Snapped off a couple of quick shots then went in for the tripod. Came out and it was gone! Hence the crap photo. I think this is a female...the males are smaller and buff coloured.

Pretty good for a quick shot. I like the pattern made by the b/g.

I'd crop it a bit tighter and crank up the contrast/saturation a bit...

Lovely shot Martin, and most excellent PS work by Mr Simpo.

I'd agree with Simpo's comment about the backgound, the leaves on that plant (? a palm of some kind) have a really good "structural" feel to them that highlights the insect nicely.

If there are more of these around I feel you might be tempted by a macro lens

You know I think I might...he says after purchasing a second hand 105mm f2.5 for just this kind of thing

Do it, you'll only get one in six months anyway

Thanks, Ian, but I disagree. A better lens is for macro was called for, and a tiny bit of fill- in flash. But when I get my 28-135 IS repaired you can bet your shirt I won't see another Mantis!

You know I get the same from Mrs CVP. You can imagine what she said when I bought the 300mm f2.8 (second hand I hasten to add) But she does like the images it gives on her D70, so it's not just for me...honest

Excellent shot! How did you get it to look straight down the lens?
