Did the car wash open the boot?

Is the BMW badge the boot release on the 6GC? Assuming it is then it might have been triggered by the brushes as I find it hard to believe that it would snag on the boot and rip it open.

So in theory Morissons are right in that the car wash was not at fault - probably why he went running to the press.

Unrelated but it looks like BMW are now using composite material to make their boots; that white powder/composite material was first used on the M3 CSL. I got covered in the stuff when making a hole for a reversing camera.

glad to see they are renewing the rear window, i would have not spotted the damage there

I've had this happen with a 1978 Alfa GTV, the brushes pushed the button and unlocked it then on the return trip they lifted up the tailgate. Fortunately a 1970s Alfa must be a bit more sturdy than this German coupe as there was no damage (apart from a very wet boot carpet). After that I always made sure the boot was locked before it went in a carwash.

Makes me think though. My Punto tailgate opens if you press the badge so worth remembering!

Lovely car but there no way I'd take it through one of those car washes especially with it being black. Will show up swirls very easily.

What seems odd is he has the means to acquire a £75,000 car (maybe a deposit for a lease but still a good chunk of change) and would cycle to work and back... Hire/Buy a snotter and charge whoever pays whether that be Morrisons or the insurance company... And surely wouldn't his insurer sort everything, with legal actions?
