Pre-cat Gauge Adhesive

My oil pressure gauge has fallen off the back of the dashboard. I know that the best approach would be to remove the dash and do it properly but my veneer is original and fragile/delaminating (I don't think it will survive the process). I can reach the back of the gauge by pushing my hand up by the steering column.

So my question is what adhesive to use? Pre-cat gauges are just glued at a metal bracket to the metal backing of the dashboard (both aluminium I think).

I have been recommended CE Chem Ultra Bond S by a TVR Specialist but it's £50 a tube by the time you've paid postage so I'm hoping there's a cheaper option I can try first. I'm reliably informed Araldite lasts about 5min in this application.

You can only do the job properly from behind; the surface will be rusty and ideally want cleaning up. A two part epoxy would be fine. If you want to try to bodge it from the front, a blob of sikaflex might do it. Hold the gauge in place for 24 hours til well and truly set though.

Hi Simon, Just catching up on PH after a couple of busy months. You may be interested in a post I am preparing shortly, all about a NEW Griff dash concept which I have just installed in my Griff! It does away with all the Blue Peter like glue and little araldited spaceras and bracketry! As run in my initial 'Dash' topic a while back introduciing the concept, I have designed and built a laminated dash assembly! The gauges now all snugly 'bezel mount using the correct clamps and the front wooden veneered ply layer it the decorative part with clearance fit for the bezels! All in last weekend,it looks great and no issues now with flexing and cracking of veneer! Will make a full post soon with photos etc. I did make a spare for demo purposes! Regards, Pete
