Sadly not so uncommon as to be newsworthy.
The worst example I've come across was an ex work colleague who collapsed and died in a supermarket. It was discovered that his phone was missing.
CCTV later revealed a scooter walking up to his collapsed body in the aisle and taking the phone before walking away.

As terrible as it is, it doesn't happen all the time.
I was seriously ill last year and had my watch taken off me by a male nurse when I was rushed to have a scan. I was wheeled out of the scanning room a couple of hours later and he appeared over my shoulder some seconds later and handed it to me having taken it to look after when I went in.
If he'd not done that I wouldn't have known who had taken it at the time.
I hope whoever took it has guilt and it appears back in the ward or wherever.

I assure, they won't.When my sister died, all her rings and jewellery were stolen from her, some was my Mum's and she noticed. My dad and I went back to the morgue and said we'd be back to collect it in 24hrs.
We went back, and all was returned to us, cleaned and polished, we assume by the jewellers/pawn shop who had bought it in.
Thieving scum are everywhere.
When my own Dad passed away suddenly in hospital of a Massive Heart Attack, I went in with my mum to see him very quickly after.
He still had his watch on, so I took it off and put it on my own wrist.
He had been taken into hospital a few days earlier with another problem not heart related, he had his New glasses either nicked or lost, he had been very stressed about it.
I explained to a Nurse that I had taken my Dads Watch of his wrist for safe keeping, she said I was not supposed to do that, I replied did you find his glasses then?
A few years later my Mum was taken ill on the first day of her holiday in Ireland and she had her purse with all her money taken about 200 euro's, she had kept her cards seperate.
I was told on the phone they had a suspect but all i was intrested that I got mum back safe, she did recover and was not too bothered about the theft as they did not take anyting sentimental to her.
Worked in Hospitals most of my Career, theft is too common.
I feel very sorry for the family in the news story, the watch had more sentimental value to them i expect than money value, I hope they get it back.

Hospitals are public places so anyone can walk in off the street and pretty much access most areas. There's a story from a hospital where I used to work where two workmen went into the boardroom and started to carry off an old grandfather clock. When approached by security they explained they had been hired by the trust to service the clock. So security gives them a hand to load the clock in their van, only to find our later they had nicked it, with the assistance of Hospital security!
This is an Awful tale of scumbags piling on more misery on a family that have lost a loved one. Hope they get caught or karma catches up with them.

Also happens under police custody. The wife of a friend of mine had her wedding ring stolen - either during the autopsy or while in the morgue.
Police response was to 'close ranks' and try and smear my friend - suggesting he had killed his wife and there never was a ring...
The Police eventually settled out of court and issued a public apology... Quite shocking

Unbelieveable. What is wrong with people?
However, there are honest people around, we just don't hear about them. I found a purse at the top of the escalators at Satnsted Airport a few years back. I picked it up and looked inside, besides being full of money it also had a train ticket inside. As I was there to do some work in the station office, I refused to hand it in when I signed in and took it with me to the station office - I knew she would be back there at some point and she was was in a real panic, asking if anyone had seen it and handed it in. The look on her face when I said I had it was worth more than any of the money in the purse.

I was bleeding from my ulna nerve (fell on a glass) - laid out on a bed in Hammersmith hospital.
Wife ran out to pump the thieving b
d's parking fee - left my new phone next to me - in case something happened.
In and out of consciousness at the time due to blood loss and shock.
She came back in within 15 minutes and both my wallet and phone had gone. (The wallet - I believe was in my trousers at the side of the bed - the phone tucked up into my side).
Hospital are full of scummy thieves and opportunists.
