After some advice if possible?

I've decided that I've want a Go Pro type device which I am able to mount to various places on my car (rear wing, roof etc) when I go on hoons, but don't want to spend loads of money on a go pro if I can avoid it, at least to start with.

Is there any alternatives which can be mounted to cars which are any good?

I had a quick look, and couldn't see the subject repeated.
Cheers

Have a look at the sony Action Cam line up.

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/92109...

This is the cheapest and still better than the latest GoPro Silver.

All Sony action Cams have IS and it really does put them front of the GoPro line up.

That Sony doesn't appear to have a car mount available.

For a complete Go Pro knock off, have a look at the SJ4000 http://www.foxoffer.com/sjcam-sj4000-full-hd-water...

Theres loads of video comparisons on youtube and for the money it seems like a good cheap alternative (especially as it uses the same go pro connector so theres loads of mounts available for it). I have just ordered one myself so cant comment on how good it is yet.

Otherwise if you want to spend a bit more money I would say the Sony action cams as well.

The sony looks good but its waterproof case doesnt have a flat lens. Do you not need the flat lens if you are going to use these things underwater? I remember the old GoPro case with the non-flat lens would just go all blurry under water but the new one with the flat lens doesn't. Guess its something to do with angles of refraction when going air-lens to water-lens.

You can get a flat lens for the sony if you wish.

Most people will use them on things like cars etc etc where the curved lens helps remove spray quicker.

Other than not being waterproof, I can't fault my Mobius.

Youtube rapes the quality somewhat, but here's an 'in-car' I used it for recently:

I would stick with something that uses the GoPro mounting system. At least that way you'll have a camera which you can mount almost anywhere even if you dont have the quality or features of the GoPro.

I have bought 3 of these.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321234729133?ssPageName=...
At less than £25 each they are cheap and you don't have to worry about them getting damaged. I have used them on my car (see youtube "a short drive drive in a Lotus Elise" - I can't edit to save my life but the quality is ok for Youtube).
I may progress to Go Pros if I continue to have fun with these but for the moment they are fine.
A GoPro is better in every way - but to do what I have done would have cost me nearly £1000 which I can't afford at the moment.

This is poor advice IMO, the gopro mounting system is poor at best.

No other manufacturer uses this system and for a very good reason.

If you really want to use gopro mounting options you can get an adapter to go from the standard fitment to GoPro.

I really don't get why people keep saying there are more options for gopro mounts.

I bought one of these last month and it is very good quality http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HD1080P-SJ4000-Waterproo...
I took it snorkelling on holiday and there were no leaks at all. The mounts are GoPro compatible, but also easily mounted to conventional tripod etc - it comes with loads of fittings and mounts.

Here is a link to some video taken with the cam - the quality is MUCH reduced for YouTube... actual video resolution on my PC is much better, but you get an idea of colour etc... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZirVz8cUCI

Completely inaccurate. There are loads of GoPro alternatives that use the GoPro mounting system. There are hundreds of mounts designed specifically for it.

When you say an adapter to go from standard fitment to GoPro, what do you mean by standard fitment?

OK name them.....

I will start with the companys who don't use the "GoPro system"

ALL of these use the same mount.

Panasonic
Sony
Canon
Nikon
Samsung
Pentax

And many many more.

Who uses the GoPro system?

Oh and no cheapie market specials please.

That looks pretty good to me, although they seems to be £54.99 now!

Might consider one of these
