GT86 for a poor man recommendations?

I had the bad idea of test driving a BRZ and GT86 back to back last weekend. This confirmed one thing, i want one!
However doing the sums i could afford one but having nothing to show for it after 3 years on pcp did get me thinking the money would be better spent elsewhere. Terrible man maths i know but some of us have to be boring. So onto my question any recommendations for a poor mans GT86 for fun, reliable, revy cars £1-10k that get close to the GT86 ethos?

To replicate the feel, I think you want something front engine / rear drive. Mid engined cars tend to have too much traction, which isn't a bad thing in itself but feels different. You also want something that is or at least feels reasonably light, with a low centre of gravity. 350Z feels nothing like.
I fancied a new GT86 also but couldn't face the price of them, being a tight b*stard. I ended up with a S2000, partly because I've always wanted one, partly because it seemed the best compromise between cost/fun/reliability/character. I have no doubts so far that I have done the right thing, possibly in 3 or 4 years I might move onto a used GT86 at a more palatable price, for when I see one I still think "I like that" but on the other hand it would have to be something special for me to give up the S2000.
I remember seeing a few S2000s tested alongside GT86/BRZ/Scion FRSs in youtube review vidoes as they share similar characteristics - similar concept, revvy engine, perceived lack of torque, back to basics philosophy. The consensus seems to be that the GT86/BRZ/FRS is more accessibly fun but the S2000 goes a bit harder - inevitable in view of the extra power in a S2000, I'd have thought.
Another good call could be a 350Z but they are a bit chunkier and brawnier I'd say, not quite the same thing. I know it's FWD, but how about a late Celica 190/T-Sport/GT? Plenty of discussion of them on here recently, good cars in my opinion if you can see past the hairdresser image and preconceptions of some.

RX8 or MX5 are the most likely contenders, I haven't driven an S2000 but from what I've heard I don't think they have have the safe feel to them.

Exactly. And if you want the revvy type, look for a 2.5S - which happen to be very cheap. If you are lucky, you may find a good one around the £2k mark, although there is a lot of dross out there. Oli.
However, seeing as the youngest ones are now about 21/22 years old they can take a little bit of looking after, and they're a lot older than other cars suggested here (ie rustly sills etc..), it's probably best as a weekend toy rather than a daily driver(which it's still possible to use them as)
