Vantage Mechanical Noises
Discussion
When I took delivery of my V8VS (Sportshift II) my dealer mentioned that they made quite a lot of mechanical noise and that it was normal (even mentioned several ex-DB9 owners bringing cars back thinking something was wrong).
So I have taken that on board and I am trying hard to ignore most of the strange noises but one in particular is worrying me. At low speeds, on a trailing throttle, there is a rattle like sound (but not metal bits banging together, hard to describe) from the rear of the car. I think it is something to do with the Sportshift mechanism. If I give the car some revs it goes away but that is not always possible as one dawdles around town.
From my rather inept decsription has anyone got an idea what I might be hearing? It is definitely I think transmission or diff based given it comes from behind me. I never hear it at speeds above 20-30 mph.

just a shot in the dark, but a lot of the low speed noises turn out to be handbrake pads dragging slightly on the discs. Tho your description doesn't sound quite like that.

Sounds more like the carbon drive shaft to me. This makes a strange noise on take up at slow speeds and indeed they all do that (or at least manual boxes, I imagine the same is true with SS?)
Mine also makes the occasional whine when cold which goes away when I stop the car. Only occasionally. Turned out to be from the oil pump which again is common place although I can never work out why it is only occasionally.
Other common noises are rattles from the sat nav whether occasional or permanent.
I'm not aware of the car making other mechanical noises though, was he more specific.?

Thanks both, no he was not more specific (and it was Lancaster Reading so they are gone now) but this noise would be enough for anyone to think something was wrong
The driveshaft theory sounds very plausible.
Is that also likely to happen on a trailing throttle, for example as you slow down to take a very low speed curve say in a car park or something. So you are not really touching the throttle at all and it goes away immediately you apply some gas?
Obviously the car is almost brand new so I could go to a dealer (though none are particularly local) and the oracle that is PH often knows more.

I've a V8S and it makes all sorts of noises. I have also wondered if it was a problem, stories of gearboxes going pop (I think both Rob and Mikey have has such issues) haven't helped but decided that's its part of the character and if the worse did happen it would happen under warranty. Mine tends to quieten down when warmed up which also makes me feel better, unless I've just drowned it out with the exhaust by then
Personally I think it's a case of some cars do it. I listened to a few cars at Burghley as they rumbled past on the grass, I couldn't hear anything untoward. Mine would have be groaning away like mad.
It's very similar to any manual car when you are in too higher gear, and it starts to labour. Most of the time I can sense when it's about to it, it's definitely related to load and low revs.
Would be good to find anyone who has the fault recognised by a dealer, and repaired under warranty.
