USB stick to store & play music...

Picking up a new (ex-demo) 981 Boxster next week and the dealer said that there's a port in the glove box where you can plug in a USB stick with up to 4,000 (I think) songs stored on it. Never having had such luxuries I have to ask, how do you get the music onto the memory stick, do I need some piece of software on my PC? Presumably then the touch screen identifies all the songs by name?

I have a stick in my spyder it is very easy to transfer your music on your computer (no special software needed)to a memory stick and tracks are listed on PCM but the only annoying thing for me is it plays tracks in alphabetical order.

Not if you tell it not to.....................

Album order or playlist. It is up to you.

If not you need to edit your ID tags on the tracks

So do I need to "rip" the music into iTunes on my PC and then copy the individual .mpg files to the stick?

The best way is to rip them using a program like CDEX and then imprt into iTunes to edit the tags as required.

Yes, but don't copy track by track - once you have them in iTunes with all the track #, album etc info, you can find the iTunes folder where all the music is saved and select multiple albums or the whole lot, and drag and drop into USB stick

I import all my music incl CD's into Itunes in .MP3 format and then copy them from the Itunes music folder to the memory stick. This has worked on my old 997.2 and current 991; it also works on my wife's Merc & the family Rav4.

It's tiny so won't get in the way inside the glove box. Won't snap off, either.

Just rip your CDs using Windows Media Player. It creates MP3s. You can specify a folder for each album. Then copy the folder to the memory stick. It acts as a portable drive - your headunit should be able to see the folder if it's like any other MP3-reading headunit. If you have a port in the headunit's face then you could have two drives. My cheapo headunit has a front port and a port on the rear (via a cable) so I have two drive.

Have you got an after market fit for your head unit? I have to use the AUX plug, in the armrest and a Suffle, with is ok but not very flexible.

I just copy from windows media player and drag over to USB stick and plug in under arm rest! But when I use my sony MP3 player plugged in under arm rest it plays in correct order and not alphabetically although transferred the same way in windows media player but the USB stick is more convenient

Dunno about iTunes or your specific headunit. That's why I just use WMM to keep things simple.
